Cornerback Tracy Excelling in Nickel Role

Zion Tracy has been a standout in Penn State's defense

By Bryan Portney

Cornerback Zion Tracy made his mark on the big stage last year against No. 2 Ohio State with a pick six in the first quarter. Now, he’s still one of the key players in the Penn State secondary as he and the team prepare for a rematch with the nation’s top dogs in Columbus.

Changing Roles And Stepping Up

Tracy played in all 29 of Penn State’s games in the first two seasons of his collegiate career, but he only started in four of them. Now, things have changed.

Cam Miller transferred to Rutgers and Jaylen Reed was drafted by the Houston Texans after 2024, which gave Tracy more room to work with as he earned the starting role at nickelback ahead of the 2025 season.

Tracy was the primary punt returner last season – fielding 15 punts for 87 yards – but the addition of wide receiver Devonte Ross from the transfer portal has filled that spot, giving Tracy more time to focus in the secondary.
