Men's Soccer Captain Ben Liscum Cherishes Penn State Career
Liscum's accomplishments go far beyond the field
As an athlete, leader and person, Ben Liscum truly embodies what it means to be a Penn Stater. Liscum fulfilled his childhood dream, captaining Penn State’s men’s soccer team for the last two seasons, and becoming a recognizable figure on campus throughout his 5 years in Happy Valley. Liscum defied the odds and left a legacy not just characterized by greatness on-the-pitch, but also the impact he made in the community and his love for the blue and white.
“I was a local club guy in the middle of Pennsylvania and played high school soccer,” said Liscum. “I was never really supposed to be here.”
Liscum is the youngest of 3 brothers. As a little kid, Liscum was introduced to soccer by his middle brother Nate, who played collegiately at division 3 Clarkson. Liscum would play with Nate in their front yard and strived to be like him.
“We definitely used to butt heads back in the day playing in the front yard,” said Nate. “It made both of us better.”
Liscum is 3 years younger than his brother, but that did not stop him from challenging himself against Nate and his friends.
“We got to take our fair share of hits on him,” said Nate. “It kind of made him tougher and more competitive.”
