Men's Basketball Grinds Out 76-68 Victory vs. Fairfield
Penn State overcomes sluggish start to win season-opener
The Nittany Lions opened their 2025 college basketball season at the Bryce Jordan Center with a hard-fought win over Fairfield. Despite some early jitters from this developing roster, Penn State found its rhythm late, stringing together solid defensive stops and huge shots to close out the game. The performance showcased the team’s composure and toughness, which can be a great sign for things to come as this team continues to grow throughout the season.
Game Recap
The youthfulness of this roster showed early as Fairfield raced to a 15-2 lead with Penn State suffering from sloppy turnovers and rushed possessions. However, Penn State immediately answered with a 14-2 run of its own, sparked by sensational true freshman guard Kayden Mingo attacking the rim with authority. With a very back-and-forth first half between both teams, Penn State couldn’t generate any separation as senior guard Braden Sparks kept Fairfield right in the mix as the first half ended knotted up 37-37.
When the second half rolled around, Fairfield’s aggressiveness on the offensive glass was causing major issues for Penn State, allowing for plenty of second chances for the Stags. As the game came down to the wire, Ivan Jurić hit a massive straight-away three to ignite an 11-0 run for Penn State to officially put the game out of reach. Melih Tunca and Kayden Mingo also hit clutch baskets when the Lions needed them the most, giving Penn State the win to start their 2025 campaign.
